To help development teams better understand the quality of their software and cut down on rework time, MindTree, an IT solutions company, has introduced MindTest. The solution, revealed today, uses a metric-driven approach for testing and quality measurements.
The Test Quality Index assesses the quality of testing compliance during software development. Made up of two checklists (one to represent things done after development and one for actions taken during development, such as regression testing), TQI scores team members on particular techniques, explained Sylvia Veeraraghavan, general manager and process evangelist at MindTree.
From what risks are covered to the quality of test design and test cases, TQI offers a “qualitative way to look at your development,” she said. “It’s an auditing process that provides end-to-end governance of a project, which can help determine how much money should go into rework, among other decisions.”
For a quantitative way to measure a project, the Testing Metrics Analysis and Decision framework “looks at the whole picture,” Veeraraghavan said. TMAD shows how all the metrics play together and what steps need to be taken to meet business goals, such as return on investment, she said.
If defect containment effectiveness is a proposed metric, other metrics such as improved test-case review effectiveness and process compliance need to be taken into account, Veeraraghavan said. “Because if you look at one metric, it becomes misleading.”
