Coverity 5's defect-impact mapping keeps multiple teams on same page

November 11, 2009 —  Coverity has brought new defect-tracking and identification capabilities to an update of its software integrity suite.

Coverity 5, announced yesterday, has a feature called defect-impact mapping that lets users identify how a defect can impact multiple codebases or projects. Dave Peterson, CMO for Coverity, said Coverity 5’s defect-impact mapping capabilities can save time because a developer can see all projects being impacted, and can notify team members on how to fix the defect.

“From a developer standpoint, this is a big deal because any developer working in a distributed organization is using a lot of shared code,” Peterson said.

“What happens a lot is when the developer introduces a defect, that defect might show up in 10 other places, and therefore there’re 10 different teams trying to put out that same fire.”

Coverity 5 also lets developers automatically filter through problems found during scans to identify the highest severity defects. New reporting capabilities help users track fixed defects and recognize trends among defects.

When defects are found, Coverity provides links to the Common Weakness Enumeration, a third-party site that provides information on common defects in software. This can provide developers with knowledge on defects they may not be familiar with.

Coverity 5 will be generally available by the end of the first quarter of 2010, according to the company.
