Infragistics brings Silverlight, WPF controls to Windows Forms

September 14, 2009 —  Component maker Infragistics has released an updated suite of .NET controls for Windows client applications that focuses heavily on Windows Forms development. It also makes its Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) grid control perform more like Microsoft Excel.

Released today, NetAdvantage for .NET 2009 Volume 2: Win Client introduces three new WinForms controls: a timeline for scheduling applications, a tile panel, and a container for embedding other controls within Infragistics' controls.

WinTimelineView displays scheduled appointments over a horizontal axis; schedules for multiple people can be included within the same application. The WinTilePanel control is a port of Infragistics' Silverlight Tile Panel user interface; it allows multiple pieces of information to be displayed within a single screen.

WinControlContainerEditor is a port of a WPF control for embedding custom controls so that gauges and charts may appear inside of grids, for example.

The existing WinForms grid control has increased options for styling appearance objects, and can now drill down into selections of data, said Andrew Flick, product manager for Win Client. "Animations on Windows Forms are something that our customers will find really valuable.

"We will push Windows Forms despite enhancements on other [Microsoft] platforms," he continued. "We want to give customers the choice of using Windows Forms for the long term. There is a lot of existing development in Windows Forms."

Infragistics' WPF data grid was given new data visualization capabilities and includes many usability changes. Developers may add custom interface elements for data errors that violate data structures or classes, and can also display historical data within a cell. End users can now fully utilize the Windows clipboard, undo any action, and plan and customize the fields inside of a grid.

Pricing starts at US$1,195, with customizable support available for an additional $495. The Windows Forms and WPF toolsets may be purchased individually for $995 each.
