VersionOne gets lean in its agile management tool

July 30, 2009 —  A new version of VersionOne’s V1: Agile Enterprise released yesterday includes a new Storyboard that supports “kanban”-style lean software development with a Scrum management front end.

Kanban is a technique first developed at Toyota that uses tickets to trigger the next project, ensuring that what is produced meets the actual demands of the consumers. The new Storyboard enables those tickets—story cards in Scrum—to be dragged and dropped through a workflow, and to set limits on Work in Process to better create efficiencies in production, said VersionOne president and CEO Robert Holler.

Kanban is associated with lean production, which says that producing anything other than what directly meets customer needs is wasteful. Lean production is aligned with agile processes in software development.

Another key new feature is the ability to switch between stories and defects, to split defects, and add or import epics—high-level new features—into the management tool.
