June 15, 2009 —  Hewlett-Packard and Microsoft have announced a four-year agreement around communications technologies. As part of the agreement, the two companies will form joint teams to collaborate on product and service development across Microsoft Office SharePoint Server, Microsoft Exchange Server and Microsoft Office Communications Server, as well as HP ProCurve networking products. They will invest US$180 million in product development and services along with joint sales and marketing.

Enterprise C++ component and tool provider Rogue Wave Software has acquired analytics software company Visual Numerics. The Houston-based Visual Numerics has two main product lines: the IMSL Numerical Libraries for mathematical and statistical analysis; and the PV-WAVE visual data analysis development environment. Rogue Wave executives said the acquisition of Visual Numerics brings advanced data analysis to Rogue Wave's software development tools, components and frameworks.

 

EARNINGS
Hewlett-Packard announced financial results for its second fiscal quarter ended April 30, with net revenues of US$27.4 billion, down 3% from the same quarter a year earlier. GAAP net earnings for the quarter were $1.7 billion, compared to $2.1 billion in the same quarter a year before. Revenue from HP’s software unit declined 15% to $880 million, and operating profit from software was $157 million, up from $104 million in the prior-year period.

Business integration and RIA company Magic Software reported total revenues of US$13.8 million in its first quarter 2009, a decrease of 9% compared to $15.1 million in the first quarter of 2008. Net income totaled $0.7 million, compared to $0.1 million in the first quarter of 2008, while operating income amounted to $0.7 million, compared to a loss of $0.1 million recorded in the same period of 2008.

Novell reported net revenues of US$216 million for its second 2009 fiscal quarter ended April 30. That figure was lower than net revenues of $236 million for the second fiscal quarter of 2008. Net income in the 2009 quarter was $16 million, compared to net income of $6 million for same quarter a year earlier. Novell reported $37 million of revenue from its Linux platform, up 25% compared to the product revenue from Linux from the same period last year.

Open-source software development website SourceForge.net announced total revenues for the first quarter 2009 of US$10.4 million, as compared to $11.4 million for the first quarter of 2008. Net loss for the first quarter was $7.4 million, compared to a net loss of $0.9 million for the same period a year ago.
