DevTrack 8.0 is on track for a June release

May 18, 2009 —
The wikification of the world continues. TechExcel will release DevTrack 8.0 in early to mid June, and with it comes a selection of wiki tools for bringing online collaboration into this issue-tracking system. The new version also adds Unicode support, so developers can use characters from languages like Japanese and Korean without having to reinstall or change the configuration of the product.

Paul Unterberg, senior product manager at TechExcel, said that DevTrack's development road map is pointed toward better management of distributed projects and issues. As a function of this, TechExcel is bringing its various application life-cycle management tools into line with one another, allowing greater integration between them. DevTrack 8.0 will sell for US$500 per user up to 100 users.

“Really, the whole 8.0 release is about shifting from single-point solutions with APIs that integrate, to more complete ALM solutions, to making sure DevTrack ties in better with our requirements management solution and our test case management solution,” said Unterberg. “A lot of changes are architectural as well as [working] toward the concept of how a bug relates a requirement to a test case. These are some of the suite-wide integration changes we've made.”

That concept of a more cohesive collaborative ALM environment is reflected in the new DevTrack wiki, included in version 8.0. Developers can post screenshots, add comments on requirements, and have lengthy discussions about bugs in the database by using these wikis.

“The wikis are having huge impact on beta users,” said Unterberg. “They are loving the ability to collaborate on knowledge and anything that could relate to the development process. They can edit design documents or comment on a use case, and reference that back to the work items.”

For managers, reporting is also getting an upgrade, said Unterberg. “We've enhanced the graphics engine we use in the reporting, so we use have better control over displaying the results. We added productivity reports so you can see how developers are working across projects,” he said.
