Layer 7 takes security to the cloud

April 28, 2009 —
Layer 7 Technologies, a company that grew up in the world of service-oriented architecture, has stretched its security arm into cloud computing, taking the codebase for on-premise security and governance services and making it completely virtualized.

Scott Morrison, the company’s chief architect and vice president of engineering, said that all functionality remains intact in the cloud because Layer 7’s technology is software-based.

“It’s 100% software; it could be dropped anywhere,” he said. “It could be dropped on your laptop, on Amazon’s cloud and Web services, or on somebody’s desktop, and it gives you the same functionality.

“That’s sort of the core of what we’re offering; a soup-to-nuts cloud security and governance offering which works exactly the same whether it’s a piece of hardware that you plug into your network, or a virtualized version that could be deployed to all sorts of cloud services.”

The company’s Enterprise Service Manager offers information on an organization’s global security activities so that users can move policies into the cloud and vice versa. The security manager can replicate policies and reroute traffic among an organization’s offices around the world, Morrison said.

“These virtualized instances can follow around your applications,” he said. “They can be security-bound to those applications so they act as a security wrapper around those apps. That ensures your security policies and governance strategy is applied to that application, regardless of where it goes.”
