CollabNet puts emphasis on team

April 14, 2009 — The folks behind CollabNet have shifted their emphasis from the code to the coders.

They see more software being created by distributed teams using agile processes, and have changed the name of their SourceForge collaboration software to TeamForge to reflect that new view. But TeamForge also adds such things as continuous integration and cloud computing to bring more application life-cycle features into the hands of developers.

“The name change reflects how we see development going,” said Rosie Pongracz, director of product marketing at CollabNet. “It’s team-oriented, fast, flexible and agile. We want to empower teams working this way.”

Richard Murray, vice president of engineering at CollabNet, said TeamForge 5.2, which is being released today, focuses on agile development. A plug-in integration with open-source continuous integration tool Hudson gives TeamForge users the ability to track builds at all levels. The results of those builds can be incorporated into the workflow of the development team, he explained.

Murray said CollabNet is close with the lead committers on the Hudson project, and he said that the company has made its plug-in available as open source. He said he believes CollabNet is the first enterprise to fully embrace Hudson for continuous integration.

That level of integration requires enhanced lab management, Murray explained. TeamForge enables Hudson users to provision and access physical build and test servers or servers from CollabNet’s OnDemand Cloud, Amazon’s EC2, or their own clouds. “Close to 2 million users are using CollabNet’s enterprise product set, and three-quarters of them are in our cloud,” Murray said.

TeamForge 5.2 is available as a free trial download at www.collab.net/downloadctf.
