March 18, 2009 —  .NET component maker ComponentOne's first major release of the year will be focused on delivering new features for Web applications.

Studio Enterprise 2009, to be released this week, introduces entirely reengineered ASP.NET controls, as well as new and updated Silverlight controls. ComponentOne's PDF and spelling controls were also given new capabilities.

The suite's ASP.NET controls include a calendar, editor, grid, input, schedule and toolbar. While they maintain ComponentOne's previous object model, the controls are designed to have better performance, a smaller footprint, and increased client-side interaction, according to the company.

Each Silverlight control now has built-in support for Microsoft's Silverlight Toolkit themes. Individually, the Silverlight calendar control has a new vector layer, as well support for the Keyhole Markup Language for annotating maps. The data grid control has been given Microsoft Outlook-style grouping, and the rich text box control has a redo/undo function and can import and export RTF documents, according to the company.

A new image class allows developers to programmatically edit image files (such as changing an image’s resolution); a new property grid for developers, which provides the properties of specified objects; and a new time picker and date/time picker control, which provides an interface for selecting date and time values, said product manager Chris Meredith.

On the client-side, ComponentOne's chart control for Windows Presentation Foundation has added more chart types, and its PDF for .NET control has AcroFields and AcroForms support. AcroFields and AcroForms are designed by Adobe to make PDF documents interactive.

Lastly, Studio Enterprise 2009 has an updated IntelliSpell spell-checking add-on for Microsoft Visual Studio that can now accommodate camel-cased  and underscored words. The feature is optional and does not rely on dictionary files, said Meredith.
