JadeLiquid lets testers peer deeper into browsers

February 11, 2009 —
Web application testing tends to be a black box affair. Test tool projects like Selenium feed information into a browser, then offer up the output as evidence of success or failure. JadeLiquid Software, an Australian test tools company, announced this week that it has released a tool set that can peer deeper into the inner workings of browsers, yielding more information on test results.

The three varieties of LiquidTest hook into the internals of Firefox and Internet Explorer, giving the software a better way of determining why things aren't working during a test battery, said Duncan Thomas, vice president of JadeLiquid. He said that all LiquidTest products embed the two major browsers into test runtimes and rely on the internals for feedback, rather than simply analyzing the output.

LiquidTest Server Edition is the continuous integration component of the LiquidTest suite. It can push Web application tests into the standard test barrage fired at new builds. Testers build those tests in LiquidTest Tester Edition; those testers would use a Groovy-derived language for defining tests, said Thomas.

Outputted tests can be triggered in the continuous integration server and coordinated with Ant if they're being used on Java applications. LiquidTest can also be used to test C#, Groovy and Ruby Web applications.

LiquidTest Developer Edition is aimed at agile developers. It creates functional tests that are integrated into code as unit tests. In addition, both the Tester and Developer Editions of LiquidTest can be used to create acceptance tests and can record actions for playback at test time.

Thomas said that the key differentiator for LiquidTest is the deep integrations with Web browsers. Whereas other functional and acceptance Web application test tools analyze output, Thomas said that LiquidTest offers information that can be translated back to root causes more easily. That means AJAX and dynamic content can be traced through the browser, he said.
