EMC is expected to cut about 2,400 jobs over the next 12 to 15 months, which would equal about 6% of the company’s staff. The company also announced preliminary financial earnings showing US$4 billion in revenue for the fourth quarter of 2008, which it said was an EMC record for quarterly revenue. The reported revenue is approximately 8% more than the third quarter of 2008 and represents 4% growth over the same period a year ago.

Oracle has reportedly cut around 500 jobs in its North American sales and consulting businesses. The company had 33,526 employees in the U.S. at the end of 2008 and 86,657 employees worldwide, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Rally Software will acquire 6th Sense Analytics, a company that provides on-demand metrics products. Rally executives said that the acquisition will provide Rally customers with more access to project data, and it will improve reporting on their projects' progress and quality status in their agile development. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Sun Microsystems announced plans to acquire Q-layer, a company that automates the deployment of cloud infrastructures. Belgium-based Q-layer will become part of Sun's cloud-computing business unit, which develops and integrates cloud-computing technologies, architectures and services, according to Sun executives.

EARNINGS
Application development company Blueprint Systems reported a 300% growth in revenue on a year-over-year basis for its quarter that ended Dec. 30, 2008.

TIBCO Software reported a fourth-quarter 2008 revenue of US$185.5 million and net income of $32.3 million, compared with a revenue of $186.1 million and net income of $27.6 million for the fourth quarter of 2007. Full-year cash flow from operations in 2008 was $152 million, 49% higher than 2007.
