InterSystems adds binary XML messaging to Ensemble

January 27, 2009 —  InterSystems, a maker of SOA infrastructure software, announced on Jan. 21 an update to its Ensemble transaction-processing platform. The update reduces the size of SOAP messages by using binary or binary-encoded XML formats, and it augments the security of transactions with WS-Security 1.1.

Many of InterSystems' customers are in the healthcare industry, where hospitals, health systems and doctors are bound by the U.S. Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, said John Joseph, the company’s director of product management for Ensemble.

"Obviously the data that is being transferred is sensitive; having secure communications is important," said Joseph. "Performance is also important: The volume [of transactions] can be very large even within a single hospital network."

Further, Ensemble now offers a coordination manager for Health Level 7, a standard for exchanging health information.

Having to synchronize data across disparate systems is not a problem unique to healthcare. As such, InterSystems has extended the amount of integration protocols supported by Ensemble, with the addition of the e-business XML standards for exchanging business information.

To help improve performance, Ensemble now allows third-party SNMP-based solutions and Windows Management Instrumentation to monitor composite applications through its embedded tracking capabilities.

Many organizations are performing decision-making and data-cleansing tasks up front, Joseph explained. "That requires high-speed transactions."
