CA gives ERwin a profiler for 20th anniversary

January 26, 2009 —  The ERwin data modeling software marks its 20th year in the marketplace, and CA has unwrapped for users a new Data Profiler that lends insight into data stored in older systems, allowing it to be used more efficiently and effectively in newer applications.

The profiler is built out of technology from Exeros, and it gives CA an integrated data modeling, profiling and reporting solution that sells for US$8,000, said Donna Burbank, senior principal product manager for CA ERwin modeling suite. “ERwin has been a hub for data management, but roles are changing, and we’ve heard loud and clear from our users [saying] that ‘We’re not in a silo anymore,’ ” Burbank said.

Integration is one of the key points of the new release, Burbank said, so ERwin now has a tie-in to Business Objects’ Crystal Reports business intelligence software. It also offers Open Database Connectivity reporting and the ability to exchange metadata with other data management tools, such as Cognos and Oracle Business Intelligence, she added.

Burbank said that CA has decided to give away the community edition of the Data Modeler for free. “We’re trying to build up the community again,” she said. “CA is amazed at the passion people have for the ERwin brand.”

CA is having fun with the anniversary celebration, according to Burbank, by asking people to send in their oldest box shots of the product and to answer trivia questions such as, “Who's the first ERwin developer?” (Hint: It's Ben Cohen.)
