Eclipse PDT 2.0 released with new views, navigation

January 21, 2009 —  The Eclipse Foundation recently released PHP Development Tools 2.0, including with it a number of touch-ups to the object observation capabilities of PDT. These enhancements offer new views and new ways to navigate, according to the PDT team.

PDT 2.0 is the first version of the tools to offer a type hierarchy view, giving developers a better look at how their objects stack together. It also adds type and method navigation, which gives users more powerful ways to search code for specific items.

Under the hood, Roy Ganor, project lead for Eclipse PDT and product lead at Zend Technologies, and his cohorts have reworked the indexing and caching engine. The Eclipse Dynamic Language Toolkit now forms the basis for the PDT engine, allowing operations to be performed more quickly.

That overhaul also contributed to improved code assist features. Code completion has been reworked to make it more accurate, and a new indicator has been added to help developers searching for element references.

According to Zend Technologies, previous versions of PDT have been downloaded over a million times, making it one of the most popular Eclipse projects. Version 2.0 is available now at www.eclipse.org/pdt.
