New annotations for .NET imaging SDK

January 16, 2009 —  A supplier of .NET imaging components has introduced new document annotation capabilities to its software development kit for ASP.NET AJAX. For the first time, it has also added annotation to its Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) controls.

Yesterday, Atalasoft made DotImage 7.0 generally available. DotImage is an SDK for annotating and viewing documents and images in .NET applications. Developers may also use it for creating SharePoint Web parts that have document-imaging functionality, said Lou Franco, director of engineering.

While Vizit SP is the company's primary product for document imaging and viewing in SharePoint, it was created with DotImage. Developers can use the DotImage SDK to develop custom solutions, Franco explained.

The new version provides AJAX-based vector annotations; users are able to add layered freehand, line and polygon annotations without requiring additional browser plug-ins, said Franco. Its WPF controls now support annotations, and now every control in the DotImage SDK can save files in the PDF/A file format for archiving.

It also updates Atalasoft's DICOM medical imaging codec implementation, providing add-ons for barcode recognition, OCR, the JPEG2000 and JBIG2 codecs, and TWAIN and ISIS (Image and Scanner Interface Standard) to support imaging devices.

DotImage's assemblies were all created with .NET 3.5, and the AJAX SDK provides templates for Visual Studio, such as wizards for beginning projects, said Franco. The templates insert DotImage controls and hook them up based on the wizard choices made by users, he added. "It's a better starting point than a blank website."
