Latest Perforce SCM product assists in integrations

Perforce Software has added improved integration management and server discovery to its namesake software configuration management product.

Perforce 2008.2, released yesterday, allows developers to preview the effects of integrating changes between branches with a side-by-side display of branches and color coding for individual files, according to the company. There is a new rollback feature that allows file revisions and integrations to be undone.

John Walker, senior marketing manager of Perforce, said the new version brings improved visual reporting.

“These days, with people doing agile development, they have multiple branches and can really take advantage of our strong integration algorithms,” Walker said. “What we have now is the ability to preview the integration between branches. I can better understand what kind of work I’ll have when it comes to implementing an integration, and if there are any particular errors that will prevent me from accomplishing the integration, this tool will report that as well.”

End-user licenses, which include maintenance and technical support, start at US$900.

Walker added that Perforce has tried to increase the product's scalability for enterprise installations with this release. Some organizations using Perforce’s SCM product have well over 1,000 users working on a single Perforce server instance concurrently, he said.

Another new feature in Perforce 2008.2 is automatic server discovery, which lets users select the servers they want to connect to. Previously, users had to know the IP address and port number of the server they wanted to link with, according to the company. A scroll-down menu in the new version lists all available servers.
