CA targets .NET world with Plex

January 7, 2009 —  CA has taken aim at the .NET world with the 6.1 release of its Plex rapid application development software, with features that enable developers to model packages that can be delivered as services.

The services generated by Plex 6.1 can be based on Microsoft’s Windows Communication Foundation technology, so they can be shared within an enterprise or with outside partners, according to William Hunt, CA’s principal product manager for Plex. By supporting WCF, applications can also incorporate business processes via Windows Workflow Foundation. This gives developers the ability to design and generate code, as well as build native, services-based applications from within a single environment, Hunt said.

The multi-platform solution, released in mid-December, also supports updates in the Java platform, including Java SE 6 and Apache ANT 1.7. On the Microsoft side, Plex 6.1 now works with SQL Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008, along with 64-bit Windows applications, Hunt said. He added that the software also works with Oracle 11g and the IPv6 standard.

Plex is one of three developer products still being developed at CA in its application development and databases division; 2E and Gen are the others. The company also still advances the Aion Business Rules Expert tool. This is what remains of the development tools portfolio at CA, which acknowledged in a 2005 interview with SD Times that developer tools were not “core” to CA’s strategy going forward.

Hunt, though, said CA has “loyal, happy customers pleased with the direction we’re going with developing the tools.” He noted that all the tools contribute in some way to the company’s overall vision of enterprise IT management.

“Application development is the foundation to the skyscraper,” he said. “It may not be strategic on its face, but it’s very important to us. We have a large base of customers.”
