IBM boosts analysis features in collaborative platform

November 26, 2008 —  IBM has rolled out a product that helps all members of a software project team—including business, finance and software professionals—collaborate by using algorithms and reports.

Rational Quality Manager, made generally available yesterday, is based on IBM’s Jazz collaboration technology and gives real-time data, so team members are able to make informed decisions when developing products. A module that does predictive algorithms can determine the most important software and browser combinations to test while developing products, according to Dave Locke, IBM Rational’s director of marketing.

“This new predictive piece of Quality Manager looks at requirements, the platforms, the usage of the software, and the test harnesses to predict where the best combination of testing should lie,” Locke said. “It comes back with, effectively, a matrix of priorities you should test.”

An example Locke gave of a combination that Rational Quality Manager can test was determining if a Java application works in Windows XP Professional or other environments.

Locke said that Rational Quality Manager can help software developments understand if their team is functioning efficiently, with analysis and reporting on the amount of defects that are in individual developers' code. It can also let individual developers understand the context of their components and requirements to make sure they’ve written the right code.

In addition to Rational Quality Manager, IBM released Rational Test Lab Manager, which can help reduce energy costs by automating testing and reports on how efficiently lab resources are being used.
