December 1, 2008 —  Alchemy Solutions was expected to purchase the legacy modernization product business unit from Fujitsu Computer Systems. Alchemy has obtained the distribution rights for the Fujitsu NetCOBOL modernization product line.

Intel plans to sell approximately half of its stake in VMware, offloading 4.75 million of the 9.5 million shares it purchased in July 2007 for US$219 million. According to a regulatory filing, Intel disclosed that it has already sold 1 million shares in the virtualization company, with half going to Cisco Systems and the other half to EMC, the majority owner of VMware.

Rich media communications provider IntelePeer completed a third round of financing for US$18 million. VantagePoint Venture Partners led the financing, and the funds will be used to expand IntelePeer’s global presence and to help development of its on-demand rich media services.  

Microsoft created the BizSpark program to help early stage startups that are less than three years old and with annual revenue under US$1 million to get on their feet. BizSpark provides startups with Microsoft development tools, platform technologies and server products. The program also offers help with access to investors, advisors, clients and partners.

Oracle acquired intellectual property assets from Tacit Software, a provider of automated profiling technology. Oracle executives said the company plans to integrate the IP assets into Oracle Beehive, an enterprise collaboration platform.

SAP will resell CA’s Wily Interscope application performance management product. Wily Interscope focuses on optimizing the performance of Web applications and services. SAP executives said the product is an essential Java monitoring tool that provides detailed information about the health of SAP applications and multiple systems.

Earnings
McAfee reported total revenue of US$409.7 million in the third quarter of 2008, a 27% increase from $322 million in the same quarter of 2007. GAAP operating income for the quarter was $49.4 million, up from $46.6 million on a year-over-year basis, while GAAP net income dropped to $48.8 million from $63.4 million in third quarter of 2007.

Sun Microsystems
announced US$2.99 billion revenues for the first quarter of fiscal 2009, a 7.1% decrease from $3.219 billion for the first quarter of fiscal 2008. Net loss for the first quarter of fiscal 2009 on a GAAP basis was $1.677 billion, compared with a net income of $89 million for the first quarter of fiscal 2008.
