ActiveState Unveils Komodo 5.0

November 4, 2008 —  ActiveState has put its dragon into a release state. The company's Komodo IDE version 5.0 was released this morning, bringing with it new support for distributed source control systems such as Bazaar, Git and Mercurial. This release also supports multiple top-level windows for the first time, opening new avenues of interface customization to users of this dynamic language-targeted IDE.

Komodo 5.0 also adds new tie-ins for external code-beautifiers, like Perltidy and astyle. Making dynamic code more legible has always been part of the Komodo agenda, and ActiveState claims that the IDE's built-in code formatting tools will speed development teams' work by eliminating the confusion that can come from cluttered code.

This version of the IDE also updates the included code recognition engine with Python 2.6. The Mac OS X version of the software was refined to look and feel more like Apple's operating system.

ActiveState offers five licenses for Komodo IDE 5.0 at just under US $1,000. The company offers language-specific versions of Komodo for Perl and TCL coders. The software is available for Linux, Mac OS X and Windows.

ActiveState also offers a free and open-source version of the Komodo IDE, known as Komodo Edit. This tool was also updated to version 5.0 with this release, and it inherits all the major feature changes of its larger brother.

Both Komodo IDE and Komodo Edit 5.0 received a significant number of bug fixes in this release, including fixes for some crash-bugs. Both IDEs can be found online at www.activestate.com.
