AMD and the Advanced Technology Investment Company (ATIC) of Abu Dhabi created a semiconductor manufacturing company for foundry production. AMD will contribute to the company, temporarily being called “The Foundry Company,” with two fabrication facilities in Germany as well as intellectual property rights. ATIC is expected to invest US$2.1 billion to purchase its portion of the Foundry Company.

CA announced plans to acquire IDFocus, a company that provides identity management technology. CA executives said IDFocus prevents segregation-of-duties violations and automates identity management processes, such as provisioning, to help improve security. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Hewlett-Packard will acquire LeftHand Networks, a network storage provider, for US$360 million to extend its own storage technologies for mid-sized companies. HP executives said LeftHand’s technology is a software-based architecture that runs on its ProLiant platform, and HP will provide better server products for virtual deployments with LeftHand’s products.

Nokia announced plans to acquire Oz Communications, a Montreal-based provider of mobile messaging solutions with approximately 220 employees. With the acquisition of Oz, Nokia said it will enable faster access to instant messaging and e-mail services, including AOL, Gmail and Hotmail. Oz has over 5.5 million monthly users, according to Nokia. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Symantec signed a definitive agreement to acquire MessageLabs, a provider of online messaging and Web security services, for US$695 million. Symantec executives said the company gets an advantage in SaaS and messaging security markets with the acquisition. MessageLabs has approximately 8 million end users at around 19,000 businesses.

Telerik, a company that sells UI components for the .NET platform, announced plans to acquire Vanatec, a Germany-based object relational mapping company. Telerik executives said that the acquired object relational mapping products will reduce the number of coding hours and possibilities for bugs within .NET enterprise applications. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Earnings
Intel announced a third-quarter revenue of US$10.2 billion and operating income of $3.1 billion. The $3.1 billion in operating income is up 37% from the same quarter a year before, while the $10.2 billion in revenue is 1% higher than the third quarter of 2007 and 8% higher than the second quarter of 2008.

Enterprise resource planning software provider Lawson Software, a St. Paul, Minn.-based company, announced revenues of US$190.9 million for the first quarter of fiscal year 2009, up 2% from the $187.4 million in its fiscal 2008 first quarter. First quarter net loss was $2.5 million, compared to a net income of $5.6 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2008.
