Imaging Source moves word processing to browser doc views

November 1, 2008 —  In theory, .NET applications can be completely platform independent. The developer of a .NET word-processing component suite has extended that notion to browsers, introducing a cross-browser document viewing and forms processing control for ASP.NET.

In October, The Imaging Source delivered TX Text Control .NET 15.0, which includes a new ASP.NET-based control called document viewer. The control is capable of working with Microsoft Word compatible forms in any browser, the company says.

“Generally all browsers are supported, including browsers for handhelds and smartphones," said Björn Meyer, product manager for TX Text Control. "Currently we have only done major testing on IE and Firefox, but [we] will test fully the others later this year."

Completed forms can also be processed server-side or be printed and saved as a PDF document, according to the company. The control is not available for the ActiveX side of The Imaging Source’s components, Meyer said. The document viewer also incorporates ASP.NET AJAX.

PDF support in the TX Text Control suite has been extended for archiving documents. The Imaging Source has added support for creating and saving ISO International-conforming PDF/A documents, a subset of the PDF standard suited to long-term archiving.

Additional changes have been made to the core functionality of the suite; the end user may now create page columns and structured number lists. The controls are also capable of XHTML export.

Pricing for client side components starts at US$549, said sales engineer Ian Blackley. A .NET server component, which includes the document viewer, costs $2,998.
