Fuse ESB 4.0 is first open-source product since Iona purchase

October 16, 2008 —
Progress Software has issued its first open-source product, releasing Fuse ESB 4.0 on Tuesday after completing its acquisition of middleware company Iona Technologies.

Fuse ESB 4.0 is the commercial version of the Apache ServiceMix enterprise service bus. Progress vice president and general manager of open source Larry Alston called Fuse ESB "a battle-hardened version with one vendor for support and consulting, but benefiting from community development." ServiceMix is based on the Java Business Integration specification that provides an approach for implementing a service-oriented architecture.

Alston said Progress employs the project management committee chairs and architects behind ServiceMix, including the ActiveMQ message broker, the Camel integration framework and the CXF services framework projects, giving the company the ability to influence key features within the specifications. "We're taking stable baselines, hardening them and making them enterprise-ready," Alston said. "The Apache Foundation is a meritocracy, and one or two people can hold up a project. The community delivers high-quality, vetted pieces of software, but Apache isn't good at certifying, branding and battle-hardening."

This release of Fuse ESB includes Fuse EIP, a set of Enterprise Integration Patterns that Alston explained are graphical icons used to describe integration solutions. The release also includes a Mediation Router runtime engine for integration patterns that drop inside the ESB. Progress also adds installers and documentation, Alston said, noting too that the company is building out FUSEsource.com, a community website with resources regarding the bus.

With the Iona acquisition, Progress gained a company with a 16-year heritage in middleware and high-performance applications, Alston said. Fuse, along with Artix and Orbix, "are how people do integration and messaging in the enterprise," he said. Progress' Actional tools, along with the Iona products, "all complement the middleware backbone."
