IBM, Microsoft voted best app servers in Evans Data survey

October 15, 2008 —
Evans Data Corp. today released the results of a survey detailing the use of eight application servers in enterprises, and the results contained some relatively surprising data.

IBM's WebSphere took top honors in a survey that weighed performance, support, usability and quality to measure each server's desirability. Using these qualities as its measuring stick, the survey showed that IBM and Apache rule Java servers, while Microsoft nosed out Adobe on the Windows side of the fence.

In a year-long survey of over 700 developers, Evans Data asked respondents to score each application server in a number of categories. According to their results, IBM's WebSphere leads the pack in both scalability and support, while the closely related Apache Geronimo project (IBM offers a distribution of Geronimo known as WebSphere Community Edition) rated highly in these categories as well.

Windows Server and ColdFusion took third and fourth place, respectively. ColdFusion, in particular, rated highly in scalability, performance and support options. Evans Data attributed this spike in ColdFusion appreciation to last year's release of ColdFusion 8.0.

The Evans Data report cites WebLogic as the application server that fell the farthest in the estimations of its users. The writer of the report attributes this to the fear and confusion surrounding Oracle's acquisition of WebLogic, which was taking place while this survey was being taken.

At the bottom of the list was SAP's NetWeaver. There was no version specified in the report, but it was assumed that only version 7.0 was being considered because 7.1 was not in general release when the survey began. NetWeaver's biggest problems, as identified by users, was its inability to play well with non-SAP software and the low cost-to-value ratio.

Red Hat's JBoss came in fifth because of dislike for its application management console and the difficulty of integrating mobile environments, while Sun's Glassfish ranked sixth for its legacy support.
