CA SCM product allows real-time visibility into projects

October 7, 2008 —  CA has added new integrations and refactoring enhancements to the latest version of its software change management product.

Software Change Manager r12, released today, integrates with other CA products, including the Clarity project portfolio management tool, Service Desk Manager and Software Delivery. The ability to work with Clarity gives project managers real-time visibility into their projects’ statuses, said Prajval Parthasarathy, CA's vice president of software engineering.

“Not only do you plan a project for application development, but you can also execute it according to the process that you’ve established,” Parthasarathy said of the Clarity integration. “The integration between Service Desk Manager and Software Change Manager allows organizations to open a change request and have developers review and analyze it. As the developers work on the change request, IT people have visibility into where the change is, and finally when it’s deployed, the change is updated and the ticket can be closed.”

Software Change Manager r12 tries to make code refactoring easier by automating changes in software change management. The product lets programmers rename files and paths of the source code without breaking builds, CA executives said. It retains full auditing, security permissions and a history of modifications.

Another new feature of Software Change Manager r12 is the ability to synchronize files that developers work on in a concurrent fashion, where multiple people can modify the same item. The new version of Software Change Manager lets users make changes locally and then synchronize them with the change management repository, according to the company.

Other enhancements in Software Change Manager r12 are a new interface and integration with OpenMake Meister to make builds easier. The Meister integration tries to solve build problems with “build forensics” to bridge the production application back to its source code, CA said. The new Eclipse-based interface can handle both isolated and shared work areas.

Parthasarathy said that CA uses Software Change Manager in its own development environment to manage 3,500 developers worldwide. Their work is managed from one data center that requires only four administrators, he said.

Melinda-Carol Ballou, a program director with IDC, said there is a growing need for integration across change, system service and demand management products. “In an industry where compliance seems to touch every aspect of IT, the ability to demonstrate control over the software change process is being mandated by businesses to support governance and corporate compliance initiatives,” she said.
