IBM forms team to help ISVs use cloud computing

October 6, 2008 —
IBM is helping ISVs and software producers adopt cloud computing as a way to build and distribute products.

In discussing what services and help IBM is offering for cloud computing, Bethann Craig, director of product management for IBM Lotus, said the company is figuring out APIs that its partners can utilize in their own applications they put into the market. Craig said IBM has a research group called the ISV and Developer Relations team that works with ISVs on hosting cloud-based services.

The team offers ISVs white papers, online demos and downloadable code for building applications. It gives ISVs “technical blueprints” and tells them what pieces of middleware might be beneficial in taking an application to market. An on-demand version of Rational AppScan can scan Web applications for security bugs.

“(ISV and Developer Relations) does things on the middleware side, helping you understand how DB2, for instance, can benefit you when building an application, and from a provisioning, security … standpoint,” Craig said.

One of the main cloud computing services that IBM is rolling out today is an open beta of Bluehouse, a social networking service that “marries” IBM Lotus social networking capabilities with online meeting services. Bluehouse offers file-sharing forms for group surveys and instant messaging.

IBM also released today Lotus Sametime Unyte, a Web conferencing service for sharing documents, presentations and applications through any Web connection. It has a “waiting room” feature, so conference attendees can gather and prepare, as well as alerts for hosts of meetings. Craig claimed the main benefit of Sametime Unyte is how easy it is to access and enter a meeting.

“Our market research shows that people are hesitant to use Web conferencing or online meetings, [and it] is a bit of a fear factor with it being too hard or people not being quite sure what to do,” she said.
