Voting begins next week in JCP executive elections

October 3, 2008 —  This coming Tuesday, the ballots will open on the Java Community Process' annual executive committee elections. The two executive committees of the JCP represent EE/SE and ME respectively, and the forthcoming election will ratify three seats in each group. This is the first of two elections at the JCP this year, and the EE/SE committee will see two new companies pushing for seats.

The JCP is the governing body that creates, approves and maintains the various components, specifications and technologies that make up the Java programming language.

There are two types of elected positions inside the JCP; this election is for three of the ten ratified seats on each committee, while a formal election with nominations for the remaining five elected seats on each will take place in November.

In the EE/SE group, Ericsson and SpringSource are both campaigning for a spot of their own on one of the two vacant seats, while SAP is running to retain its own seat.

SAP is in an interesting position. In 2007, the company only appeared at five of the JCP's nine meetings. Only Borland missed more meetings in 2007, and it left the JCP at the end of that year. Google, on the other hand, missed only one meeting, but abstained from almost half of the votes put in front of the committee.

Attendance statistics for 2008 will be available at the end of the year.

On the ME side of the fence, returning members IBM, Nokia and Philips are all gunning for reelection. IBM and Nokia both put in adequate performances on the JCP in 2007, attending and voting more than 75% of the time. Philips is not on that list, however, as it was newcomer to the JCP in 2008.

The virtual ballot boxes open on Tuesday, Oct. 7, and will remain open until midnight, Oct. 20. The election is hosted by PricewaterhouseCoopers at www.jcpelection2008.org/jcp/overview.

The general vote on elected seats will begin on Nov. 4 and will, among other things, fill the empty seat left by BEA.
