Apache Qpid M3 improves Java broker, tightens code

October 1, 2008 —
Financial markets and banks the world over may be on the slide, but the contributions from those entities to enterprise software developers are trucking right along.

Today, the Apache Foundation announced the availability of Apache Qpid M3. While the project is still in the Apache incubator, this implementation of the Advanced Message Queuing Protocol already brings the enterprise business messaging protocol to C++, Java, .NET, Python and Ruby.

New to this version of Qpid are improvements to the Java broker engine, which now supports priority queues and an Apache Derby-based persistence storage database. On the client-side, the Java code has been tightened to provide faster performance.

The AMQP standard was finished two years ago. It was originally created by JP Morgan Chase, and along the way gathered Credit Suisse and Goldman Sachs as benefactors. The actual specification itself was designed to breed interoperable messaging queues for middleware installations.

As a result, much of the allure of Qpid is its multi-language approach. Release M3 includes a message broker written in both C++ and Java, bypassing some of the difficulties associated with JMS.

Apache Qpid can be downloaded for free at cwiki.apache.org/qpid.
