VMware enhances Workstation visualization windows

September 29, 2008 —  VMware has made interface enhancements and brought new graphics to its multiple virtual machine management product.

VMware Workstation is a desktop virtualization product that tests desktop and server applications in virtual machines. Version 6.5, released today, brings the ability toggle between windows on different virtual machines, among other new features.

The program can run applications in virtual machines alongside applications on a desktop, according to VMware executives. Applications will appear seamlessly, and multiple versions of the same application can be run across different virtual machines.

VMware Workstation 6.5 users can use Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer for running and displaying applications, such as for full-color graphics, video, 3D animation and rich audio. VMware executives pointed out that Workstation can now show Shader Model 2 3D graphics, which is DirectX’s means of creating a series of shader models to formulate 3D graphics.

Additional features in VMware Workstation 6.5 are Easy Install, which tries to simplify installation of Linux and Windows guest operating systems, and the ability to record a virtual machine’s memory pages, CPU instructions, and other characteristics. It can then replay the recording to analyze and debug software defects.

“VMware Workstation 6.5 lets users do things like debugging complex multi-tier applications while running productivity applications, all on a single computer,” said Jeff Jennings, vice president of desktop products and solutions at VMware. “With the enhancements in VMware Workstation 6.5, we continue to raise the bar for desktop virtualization by giving technical professionals a simpler and more secure user experience.”
