Oracle's WebLogic now available for grid-hosted apps

September 22, 2008 —  BEA's WebLogic is now a firm part of Oracle's application strategy. Today, Oracle announced the availability of its WebLogic Application Grid. This addition to the company's Fusion Middleware lineup puts BEA's application server into a position where it can deal with large, grid-hosted applications, and it brings Oracle's Coherence 3.4 and JRockit Mission Control into the mix as well.

The company also unveiled new versions of its JDeveloper IDE, the Oracle Application Development Framework, Oracle TopLink 11g and a host of new integration packs for specific services.

Oracle's updated JDeveloper 11g brings with it a host of Web-centered development features. These include support for JAX-WS Web services, numerous JSF components and new tighter integrations with WebLogic Server. The companion Oracle Application Development Framework includes the new Oracle Platform Security Services Framework, which allows developers to bring Oracle's security and identity features to bear on their applications without having to deal directly with the APIs and services themselves.

On top of all of these new features, both the Oracle Application Development Framework 11g and JDeveloper 11g include integrations with Oracle's latest version of TopLink. TopLink is Oracle's take on Java persistence, and it was donated to the Eclipse Foundation in 2006. Now it's back as TopLink 11g.

TopLink integrates with WebLogic Server and its development framework, but it can also handle database servers that are not from Oracle, including IBM DB/2, Microsoft SQLServer and MySQL.

Finally, Oracle released two new Oracle Application Integration Architecture Foundation Packs, one for public utilities, the other for the insurance industry. Much of the time-saving associated with these packs is in the pre-designed integration points, aimed at connecting systems common to each sector.

Oracle OpenWorld continues at San Francisco's Moscone Center all this week.
