Hewlett-Packard will cut approximately 24,600 jobs, about 7.5% of its work force, as part of its integration with Electronic Data Systems (EDS), an IT services company. The job cut is expected to take place over three years, and half of the restructuring will be in the United States. HP completed its US$13.9 million takeover of EDS in August. EDS has approximately 142,000 employees, and Mark Hurd, HP’s CEO, said he is confident the integration of the two companies will go well.

Microsoft will sell Greenfield Online’s Internet survey division to ZM Capital, only weeks after it had reached an agreement to acquire the division. Microsoft’s acquisition of Greenfield and the hand-off to ZM Capital’s ZM Surveys are expected to happen simultaneously in the fourth quarter of this year. Microsoft is acquiring Greenfield for US$486 million, but financial terms of the ZM Capital deal were not disclosed.

Red Hat announced plans to acquire Qumranet, a provider of virtualization products. Qumranet employees will be folded into Red Hat. Executives of the open-source software provider said the acquisition of Qumranet will increase its goal of implementing virtualization technology into every system, from servers to desktops.

Infosys Technologies, an IT and consulting firm, announced plans to acquire U.K.-based SAP consulting company Axon Group for US$753 million. Axon provides consultancy services to organizations using the SAP strategic enterprise platform, and Infosys executives said the acquisition will increase its market opportunities with large businesses. The deal is expected to be complete by November.

IBM had a 33.2% revenue share in worldwide server revenue in the second quarter, holding a 5.8 percentage point lead over second-place Hewlett-Packard, according to an IDC second-quarter report. Similarly, Gartner’s second-quarter worldwide server report showed IBM with a 31.2% revenue share, a 3.6-point lead over HP.

Tableau Software, a provider of analytics and visualization software, secured US$10 million in series B funding from New Enterprise Associates (NEA). Tableau executives said the funding will go towards the development of new products and the expansion of sales channels. NEA previously invested $5 million in Tableau in 2004.

Adobe announced plans to acquire YaWah, a Denmark-based dynamic imaging software provider. Adobe executives said the acquisition will help the European expansion of Adobe Scene7, a rich media platform for e-commerce companies. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Quest Software, a provider of application and database management products, will acquire NetPro, a provider of Microsoft infrastructure optimization products, for US$78.7 million. Quest executives said the acquisition will allow Quest to extend its product portfolio into Microsoft infrastructure management.
