Canonical, maker of the Ubuntu Linux distribution, has joined the Linux Foundation. Canonical executives said that joining the foundation gives Ubuntu more authority and better communication in the open-source community. Amanda McPherson, vice president of marketing and developer programs for the Linux Foundation, said Canonical has been involved in the foundation for some time, attending summits and participating in Linux events.

Green Hills Software achieved a Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) Maturity Level 3 rating. CMMI aids the definition and understanding of an organization’s processes. Green Hills claims to be the first embedded provider to achieve CMMI Maturity Level 3, and said its customers can reduce schedule risk and development cost with Green Hills’ CMMI-approved products.

Open-source database management software provider Ingres has joined the Intel Software Program, a set of Intel services to help companies expand their sales reach through access to Intel resellers and end customers. Ingres executives said that joining the program will help validate the value of its products, including the Ingres CAFE Java development environment.

Promisec, a server security specialist, has created an online encyclopedia of internal network security threats. The Internal Threat Encyclopedia ranks threats on a five-point scale, from “extremely critical” to “not critical,” and is continually updated with detailed threat explanations.

Updates
FarPoint Technologies, a provider of development components in Visual Studio .NET, Microsoft BizTalk Server and SharePoint Server, released a new version of its spreadsheet component for Visual Studio development. ASP.NET 4.0 offers new row edit templates, multiple row records and cell types, along with a Quick Start wizard to enable rapid prototyping.

Visual computing technology provider Nvidia added interoperability with 32- and 64-bit versions of Mac OS X and Windows Vista in version 2.0 of its CUDA C language programming environment for GPUs. The version offers new 3D textures and hardware interpolation for increasing the efficiency of such applications as medical volume reconstruction, the company said.

HiT Software, a specialist in database replication and XML mapping, has made automatic replication prioritization available in its DBMoto data replication engine. DBMoto 6.5 has a new log filtering capability, along with an option for non-critical data exclusion and replication restart abilities, the company said.

Eclipse technology provider Genuitec announced MyEclipse 7.0 Blue Edition IDE, which gives IBM WebSphere developers AJAX tooling, reporting and Eclipse 3.4 platform interoperability. Version 7.0 integrates with Enterprise JavaBeans, the Maven 2 build manager and Spring IDE for MyEclipse. The product is expected to be available in October.

Phase 2 International has launched SaaS source code control for Microsoft’s Visual Studio Team Foundation Server. The Phase 2 Hosted Team Foundation Server is available now with pricing starting at US$129 per month.

WaveMaker released Visual AJAX Studio 4.0, the newest version of its open-source development product for building Web applications. AJAX-based mashups can be created with a Live Forms capability in version 4.0, and there is a skin for the AJAX Dojo toolkit to provide a Mac-like look to Web applications, the company said.

People
Mike Bartlett has joined performance and availability product maker Mazu Networks as vice president of sales. Bartlett previously served as a sales executive with Hewlett-Packard, most recently as a regional vice president of sales in the software division.

Jeff Epstein has been tapped as Oracle’s CFO and also was named an executive vice president of the company. He replaces Safra Catz, who held the position since late 2005. Catz will remain with Oracle. Epstein  previously was finance chief of Oberon Media.
