September 15, 2008 —  Telecommunications engineering company Averox reached an agreement to acquire the assets of Provisus, a U.K.-based software development company. Averox said a main reason for the acquisition was to add Provisus’ provisioning and activation software to the Averox portfolio.

Google is selling its Performics search-engine marketing division to the Publicis Group, an advertising agency. Google absorbed Performics when it acquired DoubleClick, a digital marketing company, and split it into a search marketing agency and an affiliate marketing group. Google had been looking to sell the search marketing piece because of conflict-of-interest concerns.

Hewlett-Packard is acquiring Colubris Networks, a Waltham, Mass.-based provider of intelligent wireless networks for enterprises and service providers. HP said it would integrate Colubris’ product line into its ProCurve Networking portfolio. The acquisition is expected to close by the end of HP’s fiscal year 2008. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Microsoft and Novell expanded their 2006 interoperability agreement, with Microsoft buying US$100 million in additional SUSE Linux certificates. In November 2006, Microsoft committed $240 million to SUSE Linux. Microsoft executives said the original commitment was successful, and the company has distributed more than 50% of it.

Salesforce.com announced plans to acquire InStranet for US$31.5 million. The deal would bolster the company’s customer service department, adding about 350,000 global call center agents, Salesforce executives said. InStranet is based in Chicago and has operations in Paris. It makes software that is designed to help customers at self-service Web portals get fast answers to problems.

Symantec is acquiring consumer security specialist PC Tools in a deal that is expected to give Symantec a bigger reach in the consumer security market. PC Tools, based in Australia, will operate a subsidiary of Symantec’s consumer business unit. Symantec already has PC utilities and anti-spyware products, but it is believed the deal is more about strengthening Symantec’s strategy in that market.

Earnings
Hewlett-Packard reported net revenues of US$28 billion for its fiscal third quarter, up 10% from the same quarter last year and up 5% when adjusted for fluctuations in currency. GAAP operating profit was $2.5 billion; GAAP diluted earnings per share were 80 cents, up from 66 cents per share in the prior-year period.

Wind River Systems announced fiscal 2009 second-quarter revenue of US$91.9 million, up from $84.6 million in the same quarter last year. Net income for the quarter was $8.8 million, up from $4.3 million in the same quarter last year.
