Business Mashup Suite seeks to aid agile developers

September 10, 2008 —
Serena has focused its efforts on mashups and agile offerings, and nearly one year after creating its Business Mashup suite, Serena made the mashup building box available on demand today, letting users build and deploy mashups without the need of an IP infrastructure.

Serena executives said this makes mashup deployment significantly simpler. The company has also created what it calls Rich Interface Mashups, which tie widgets, RSS feeds and Flash components into Serena mashups. As more tech-savvy workers enter the workplace, Serena said it has seen more work happening outside of traditional application development circles. Rich Interface Mashups let users coordinate activities like business meetings and development projects without having to write code, according to Serena.

“Traditionally, our mashups have been focused on process, like coordinating activities and software development workflows,” said Nathan Rawlins, senior director of product marketing at Serena Software. “[Users] can schedule meetings through Google Calendar and do all sorts of things using these Rich Interface Mashups.”

In addition to the new components in its Business Mashup suite, Serena also announced it has created the Agile On Demand application for managing all aspects of an agile project. The application will include sprint planning and backlog management, along with other agile activities. It will have velocity analysis and acceptance test reports, along with RSS notifications and instant messaging integration. Agile On Demand can also integrate with the Business Mashup suite.

Serena executives said agile processes are being adopted more broadly, which changes the requirements for these processes. Agile On Demand is designed for global enterprise teams, and it provides training and “virtual coaching,” where users can set up times to speak with consultants. Serena has partnered with Valtech, an IT consulting company that specializes in agile methodology, to provide this feature.

“Agile practices have had higher adoption rates among smaller, co-located development teams, which today are a rarity,” said John Scumniotales, co-developer of the Scrum Agile methodology and Serena’s vice president of product development. “Our new Agile On Demand solution has been designed from the ground up to support multi-project and multi-methodology environments, making Agile accessible to any development team.”

Rawlins added that Serena hopes to “popularize” agile processes and make the concept accessible to all companies that want to use it, regardless of how distributed they are.

Agile On Demand will ship by the end of this year.
