Code Center update allows code approval grouping

September 9, 2008 —
Black Duck Software has made a name for itself in open-source code management, and today, with the release of version 1.4 of Code Center, it’s promising more control and better search functionality.

Topping the list of new features is the ability to designate entire stacks of software as approved from a legal, business and coding standpoint. Code Center already tracks all the open-source components used in an enterprise; version 1.4 now allows sets of code to be grouped together into approved stacks. Development teams can thus standardize on their own flavor of the LAMP stack or build on top of a pre-approved set of Java components, without having to bring lawyers in on the decision.

“Whether you call it ‘software component assembly,’ a ‘software supply chain’ or ‘software reuse,’ the model for software development is about using many sources for your code,” said Bill McQuaide, executive vice president of products and services at Black Duck. “Code Center today adds enhancements to organize the complex relationships among open-source software components, helping developers ensure that a stack or subsystem abides by a company’s open-source and other policies.”

Also new to Code Center is a more robust retinue of searchable databases of code. In addition to Black Duck's repositories, Code Center can now search through Koders.com to find open-source snippets.

To accommodate those not on the development team, Code Center 1.4 adds the ability to make approval processes more complex than in previous versions, so that executives, lawyers and coders can be linked into a standardized chain of command for code approval. Each user can log in and review the necessary documentation, then sign off and pass the process on to the next person in line.

The new process control function includes the ability to upload documents to Code Center to allow for a more complete audit trail.
