Apache Harmony hits M7

August 29, 2008 —  It's been a long road for the Apache Harmony Project. Originally created before Sun had decided to open-source Java SE 7, Harmony is an attempt to create the entire Java environment from scratch under an Apache license.

While Harmony hit a snag when Sun refused to hand over the code behind its Java SE 5 test compatibility kit, the project has continued without the validation tools needed to ensure that the software is completely compatible with the Java SE 5 standard. Yesterday, the Harmony project released version 5.0M7, which includes two new tools and a host of bug fixes.

The first of those new tools is called javap. Javap is a class file disassembler tool, useful when working with existing Java code. Policytool is another new tool, used to manage security policies.

In addition to these new tools, Harmony 5.0M7 received a major overhaul of its Swing widget toolkit. This, combined with a number of bug and performance fixes, helps to speed up the performance of Harmony overall.

Harmony is available for free at harmony.apache.org.
