Aptana acquires Pydev

August 28, 2008 —  Open-source Web development software provider Aptana has coiled up with the Python programming language, as it will acquire Pydev, a Python and Jython IDE.

The acquisition, announced Tuesday, gives Aptana a popular Eclipse plug-in that will allow developers to use Python in Eclipse, according to Aptana. Pydev offers code completion, refactoring, code analysis, debugging and a number of other features. Aptana executives said the acquisition sets the stage for a full Python suite of products and future services like cloud deployment.

Aptana users can employ Aptana and Pydev side by side by either adding Pydev into the standalone edition of Aptana Studio or by plugging each one into Eclipse. Aptana Studio looks to ease Web development and deployment by integrating AJAX tooling with Aptana’s Jaxer AJAX server, PHP and Ruby on Rails.

Interest in Python has been increasing, especially after Google announced that the Python language will be used for the Google App Engine earlier this year, Aptana executives noted.

Dion Almaer, an open Web advocate for Google, said, “This has been a great year for the Python developer community, with the advent of great frameworks such as Django and deployment solutions such as Google App Engine. Now the tooling is getting better all the time. One of the great tools is Pydev, especially if you are Eclipse-minded. Having Aptana take on Pydev only means progress for that project and Python developers.”

Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
