Wrapping C in snakeskin

August 25, 2008 —
Although Python is still seeking traction among developers, one company sees value in bringing its line of numeric analysis tools to the open-source language.

Visual Numerics announced the release of its Python wrappers for the company’s IMSL C Numerical Library last week. The PyIMSL wrappers, which allow Python applications to access code in the IMSL C Library DLLs or in other shared libraries, join the company’s collection of interfaces for native C, Fortran, Java and .NET. Customers of the IMSL C Library will get the PyIMSL wrappers at no extra cost, the announcement noted.

The wrapper-based approach, says the company, gives developers the ability to prototype an application in Python, then render it in C/C++ for production use, using the same mathematical and statistical algorithms. This, it added, potentially reduces both the cost to develop and the time-to-market of numerical applications.
