Aladdin solution rubs IP thieves the wrong way

August 13, 2008 —  In the classic folktale of Aladdin, a genie is kept securely in a lamp until the vessel is rubbed to free him. In the real technology world, Aladdin Knowledge Systems' new story is that class files can be kept securely in a JAR until licensing permission decrypts them.

"There are a lot of tools to look at Java byte code," which can create a security risk, said Michael Zunke, Aladdin's CTO of software digital rights management. As more Java applications are deployed out to mobile and embedded devices, the need for IP protection rises, he noted.

Aladdin’s HASP SRM Java Envelope lets users implement licensing restrictions and copy protection, as well as protection against reverse-engineering at the class level, Zunke said. Users select the files to be encrypted, and the envelope automatically "wraps" the Java applications into the HASP SRM system without any changes to the code required, he said.

The wrapper is being released as part of HASP SRM version 3.5. The version also adds key memory management tools for order entry and fulfillment, as well as new functionality in the tool's Business Studio user interface that lets users more easily search order forms.
