Sybase gears up mobile offerings

August 7, 2008 —
Sybase has created a new mobile enterprise application platform and has added new port controls to its mobile device management product.

At its TechWave conference in Las Vegas yesterday, Sybase introduced its Unwired Platform. The platform provides services that let customers mobilize data business processes using any mobile devices. Company executives said the platform includes 4GL tooling and integration with Eclipse and Visual Studio. It can integrate with enterprise applications like BMC’s Remedy, as well as applications that leverage SOA. The platform also has a single administrative console to centrally manage and deploy mobile data and applications, the company said.

The Sybase Unwired Platform is expected to ship in the fourth quarter, according to the company.

Sybase updated its Afaria mobile device management and security product, which the company said is a “core component” of its Information Anywhere suite. Version 6.0 of Afaria has new mobile device port controls and a policy-based device management capability, Sybase officials said. The mobile device port controls monitor the use of device communication ports on Windows Mobile devices.

Additionally, Sybase released SQL Anywhere 11, a data management product that has been updated with embedded full-text search and parallel sorting of data. It now has interoperability with BlackBerry devices and MySQL.
