XAware expands XML in data integration software

August 7, 2008 —  Open-source data integration software provider XAware has added automatic detection of field separators and other text processing improvements to its namesake software.

XAware 5.1, released yesterday, can use header lines in files to generate XML tags automatically for data. That lets users quickly convert files to XML so the files are exposed as data services, the company said. The new version also comes with enhanced XML Schema management capabilities.

Kirstan Vandersluis, co-founder and chief scientist of XAware, said the product has better flexibility for assigning XML Schema data types as a component of a data service. “Before, you had to specify up front what you were using and the types had to be defined in the same XML Schema file,” Vandersluis said. “Now, the types can be added later.”

The XAware data integration software can access and integrate data from multiple sources, and lets users build composite data services. “The design process is top down,” Vandersluis said. “You usually start with the XML Schema data type you are trying to conform to. You select a section of the XML format, map that to a back-end data source and then move on to another section of XML.”

Other enhancements include improved capabilities for the creation of Representational State Transfer operations and better interoperability with IBM’s DB2 and MySQL.

Company executives said that more than 150,000 copies of the data integration software have been downloaded in the past five months. XAware 5.1 is available for free use under the GPL v2 license and through a commercial license.
