August 1, 2008 —  AMD will take a US$880 million writedown on the value of its handheld and digital television units that were part of the company’s ATI Technologies acquisition in 2006, the company said in a regulatory filing. AMD also expects to take $32 million in restructuring charges for employee severance, and will record $36 million in impairment charges related to the company’s investments in Flash memory chipmaker Spansion.

Coverity acquired Solidware Technologies, a Colorado-based software readiness management company. Solidware products provide visibility into code and help ensure that software is ready to be released with data from multiple quality and security tools. Coverity officials said the acquisition would give customers a full view of the company’s applications while dealing with release requirements.

Intel sold its radio-frequency identification (RFID) operation to UHF Gen 2 RFID technology provider Impinj for an undisclosed amount. Intel’s R1000 chip integrates 90% of the components required for a reader radio onto a single chip, according to Impinj executives.

Application modernization and management company Micro Focus announced plans to acquire Liant Software, which makes products that help develop business information systems. The deal was valued at US$5 million. Micro Focus said that Liant’s technology complements its own, and it will help expand the company’s portfolio of enterprise application management products.

Sun Microsystems laid off about 1,000 employees in North America as part of a restructuring that the company announced in May. At press time, it was believed Sun was looking to reduce its staff by between 1,500 and 2,500 workers worldwide. Sun lost nearly US$34 million in its fiscal quarter, which ended March 30.
