iTKO virtualizes load testing

June 19, 2008 —  QA test teams are often compelled to work around constraints that are placed on system access. A SOA quality toolmaker has devised a solution that virtualizes dependent components aimed at making it less challenging for testers to stage environments for load and performance tests.

iTKO made a new version of its Lisa SOA testing and validation suite generally available on June 9. Lisa 4.5 builds out the company’s Virtual Services Environment (VSE) with new load testing features, and it works with more third-party integration platforms than in previous releases.

VSE was introduced in Lisa 4.0 to allow test teams to virtualize Web services. Services are constructed synthetically from WSDL models, existing services or other underlying services such as databases, enterprise service buses or Java objects.

Version 4.5 takes its virtualization engine a step further by capturing and simulating the behavior of dependent components. VSE can handle over 2,500 transactions per second with a high level of functional accuracy, according the company.

It is challenging for test teams to pull together a representative set of test data when infrastructure is shared, and agile practices can compound that problem, said Jim Mackay, iTKO’s chief marketing officer.

Lisa 4.5 allows QA testers to use meaningful live data for test transactions and to change the duration of transactions without re-instrumenting tests with new data, added iTKO Lisa product manager Chris Kraus.

The value, said Mackay, is that teams can perform tests earlier in the development life cycle at the component level in order to get a feel for where performance problems lie, without throwing more hardware at the problem.

Rather, customers can throw more third-party tools and platforms at Lisa. It supports an expanded set of business process management and governance tools such as MKS Integrity and Software AG’s CentraSite, in addition to IT operations and monitoring frameworks. CA Wily, HP OpenView, IBM Tivoli and TIBCO Hawk all work with Lisa, according to iTKO.

There are new usability and workflow features within Lisa, including hooks for HP Quality Center, and corresponding interface elements. The overall look and feel of the suite has been refreshed as well, from its context-sensitive help and wizards down to its buttons.

Lisa 4.5 also offers new means for testing the UI layer of applications that use Adobe Flash and Flex, as well as Microsoft ActiveX controls. Lisa’s recording and playback functions allow developers using these technologies to identify issues that spring up at the presentation level.

Special attention was paid to capturing the behavior of AJAX calls, Flash forms, running scripts and third-party plug-ins, said Kraus. iTKO instruments Internet Explorer by attaching a tool to its DOM model, he explained.
