Zeichick's Take: What's Apple going to do next?

Email    print
June 5, 2008 —  Three times a year, Apple has a big dog-and-pony show. Keynoted by Steve Jobs, the two  Macworld conferences and the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference are where the company brings out its newest fashions.

This year’s WWDC is coming up next week, June 9–13, in San Francisco. I’ll be there, along with executive editor P.J. Connolly and several thousand Mac and iPhone developers. The sold-out conference has 150 sessions and labs, with sessions on things like “automating your user interface” and “optimizing power consumption.”

Who cares? The important question is, what will Steve Jobs show during his keynote address?

In the interest of throwing fuel on the fire, I’ve compiled a list of 20 potential announcements. Some are probably going to happen. Some are long-standing rumors. And some are just “what-if” ideas. Let’s see if any of these come true.

1. The next-generation iPhone with 3G features
2. Expansion of the iPhone to more U.S. carriers than AT&T
3. Preview of Intel-only Mac OS X 10.6
4. New "Cinema Displays" with built-in iSight cameras
5. New versions of the MacBook Air with more features
6. A redesign of the plastic-cased MacBooks using aluminum
7. Blu-ray optical drives in Mac computers
8. LED backlighting in all flat panels
9. Solid-state hard drives in the MacBook Pro
10. A 30-inch iMac
11. Quad-core processors in iMacs and MacBook Pros
12. Reintroduction of the 17-inch iMac desktop
13. A major rebranding of the .Mac online service
14. Discontinuation of the Mac Mini
15. Dropping of all digital rights management from the iTunes Store
16. Discontinuation of the Xserve
17. iPod nanos with 16GB of storage
18. Update of the iPod Touch with more iPhone features
19. Return of a low-priced eMac model for education
20. Low-end iPhone priced under US$200

If you have any ideas of what Apple might announce—or what you’d like Jobs to say—write me at alan@bzmedia.com.
