Outsourcing is all the rage, but what's driving it?

Traditionally, outsourcing has been viewed as a great way to cut costs, but companies increasingly are looking at the practice as a tool for improving business performance and project outcomes, according to new research by Gartner.

Certainly, cost remains the big driver, cited by 47 percent of organizations responding to a survey by Gartner in its report, “What Global Buyers Want, Need and Believe About IT Outsourcing.” But 41 percent of respondents mentioned improved outcomes and performance from outsourcing, up from 28 percent in 2005.

During the next two years, outsourcing is expected to grow dramatically in all regions of the world. Nine out of 10 organizations in Asia/Pacific are expected to embrace it, with North America following closely behind.
