NetBeans 6.1 touts JavaScript support, better link to MySQL

March 17, 2008 —
Sun Microsystems has refreshed its NetBeans IDE with added JavaScript support and tighter integration with MySQL, which Sun acquired in February.
A beta version of NetBeans 6.1 is available as a free download beginning today.
The new JavaScript support is based on the dynamic language support that Sun already offers for Ruby, including code completion, quick fixes, semantic checks and refactoring, semantic highlighting, and type analysis, the company said in its announcement.
Version 6.1 also adds in a browser compatibility feature that makes it easier to write JavaScript code to run in Mozilla Firefox, Opera, Safari or Windows Internet Explorer.
The NetBeans Database Explorer in 6.1 makes it easier to create, launch and view MySQL databases, Sun said. The company paid US$1 billion to acquire the Swedish MySQL AB, which distributed the open-source database management system.
Other new NetBeans features that the company’s touting include faster startup and code completion, enhanced support for Ruby and JRuby, including a new Ruby platform manager, and beta support for IBM’s Rational ClearCase version control system.
There have been 3.2 million downloads of NetBeans over the last two years, according to Jim Parkinson, vice president of tools and services at Sun.
Sun has also stepped up its support for dynamic languages last month, with the hiring March 3 of two experts in the Python and Jython languages. Ted Leung, previously a Python developer at the Open Source Applications Foundation, and Frank Wierzbicki, lead implementer of the Jython project, joined the company. Leung will be a principal engineer and Wierzbicki will be a senior staff engineer, both of dynamic languages and tools.
