System i gets some love from CodeGear

March 12, 2008 —  CodeGear is offering IBM System i developers the same Delphi rapid application development capability that it offers for Windows and PHP-based apps.

CodeGear introduced Monday the Delphi/400 family of tools aimed at developers of applications for the System i midrange server and its predecessor, the AS/400 minicomputer.

With Delphi/400 and Delphi/400 for PHP, developers can write Windows and Web 2.0-based client applications for IBM platforms, CodeGear stated in a news release. Also, development teams can build new applications and extend existing systems with modern Windows and Web development languages such as Delphi and PHP instead of the older report program generator and COBOL languages for writing business applications.

Most AS/400 and System i applications running today are outdated “character-based, terminal-oriented applications,” said Michael Swindell, vice president of products and strategy for CodeGear, in a prepared statement. “Modernized front ends are easier to learn and operate.”

Delphi/400 Professional lists for US$4,049, while upgrades from some earlier Delphi versions sell for $3,150. Delphi/400 Enterprise is available for $5,149 new and $3,150 as an upgrade.
