Tips: Remembering the Old With the New

As we start a new year, I thought I’d help people remember some of the great information you can find on the Eclipse Web site. Much of the time, folks just visit the Web site to get the latest, greatest downloads of their favorite projects. But the site offers so much more. So let’s remember the past and the present before launching into the future.

Screen 1 shows most of the Eclipse home page at Eclipse.org. One can easily argue that everything is important on it, but what I want to focus on are things I put under the heading of Eclipse resources. An important link on the home page that you should visit often is Eclipse Plugin Central . As it states on its home page, “Eclipse Plugin Central (EPIC) offers the Eclipse community a convenient, information-rich portal that helps software developers find open source and commercial Eclipse plugins, tools, and products that enhance the entire software development life-cycle”, as shown in Screen 2.

Whether it’s new or old plugins, most active or top rated, you’ll find them here. At last look, there were over 1,000 plugins listed and categorized. There’s also a search mechanism to help you find the ones you want. If you’re shopping around for a plugin, EPIC is great place to start looking for it.

Another great link off the Eclipse home page is the Eclipse Project Wiki, as shown in Screen 3. Here you will find many links to interesting things going on in the Eclipse community, as well as links to the top-level wiki pages for all the Eclipse projects. The links that I find most useful are the ones to Eclipse FAQs including those for the foundation, webmaster, bugs and team.

Another good link is the Resource link in the top main menu of the Eclipse Home page. The page shows 280 resources on Eclipse, as shown in Screen 4, taking the form of Eclipse Corner Articles, Webinars, Podcasts, Books, Presentations, Demonstrations, Code Samples and Courses.
