AOL Pulls Plug on Netscape

December 31, 2007 —  The big surprise of the holiday weekend for some came in reports that AOL had pulled the plug on the Netscape Web browser, but perhaps more people were surprised that the company was still maintaining what was once the undisputed king of the Internet.

The Netscape browser was based on Marc Andreessen’s Mosaic project, which he developed as an undergraduate student at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the early 1990s. Although it once held over nine-tenths percent of the market share for Web browsers, neglect by AOL—which purchased Netscape Communications in 1998—combined with strong and sometimes unfair competition from Microsoft helped turn Netscape Navigator from a market leader into an afterthought.

The open source Mozilla browser began as a complete rewrite of what was supposed to be Netscape 5, and Netscape 6 later relied heavily on Mozilla code. AOL’s project lead for Netscape, Tom Drapeau, announced in a post on the Netscape blog that the company would maintain the Netscape brand as a Web portal, and continue to make older versions of the browser available for download.
