Sybase Refreshes PowerBuilder

November 15, 2007 —
Sybase has updated its PowerBuilder 11 RAD tool and the DataWindow .NET component with new features designed to take advantage of the latest technologies in the Microsoft software ecosystem.

PowerBuilder 11.1 now works with Windows Vista, and offers database driver enhancements, including new driver support for the Informix 10 database platform. It also offers incremental compile for .NET Framework applications.

DataWindow .NET 2.5 offers an updated style for data source presentation and now allows developers to use a Web service as the source for a DataWindow. The so-called “TreeView” presentation style has been extended to include Web-based applications as well as desktop ones, and the DataWindow Designer is now available as a set of Visual Studio 2005 plug-ins, so developers have one less reason to leave the IDE. The standalone DataWindow Designer remains part of the package, which in this release adds support for Microsoft SQL Server 2005.

“These enhancements represent another milestone in Sybase’s .NET Framework strategy,” said product manager Sue Dunnell, “which is to provide developers with an array of tools that solve the challenge of developing business-critical applications,” while making best use of existing skill sets.

PowerBuilder 11.1 and DataWindows .NET 2.5 will both be available on Nov. 15, and are sold separately. Updates to PowerBuilder begin at US$1,495 and new licenses are $2,995; DataWindow .NET is available for $645.
